Pitch Fibre Pipe Repair: Re-Rounding & CIPP Relining
Many pitch fibre drains can be repaired without full excavation. M.R. Drains surveys the drain by CCTV, then re-rounds and relines it with no-dig CIPP lining, or uses pipe bursting if it has deformed. We cover London and Surrey 24/7 with no call-out charges.
What is Pitch Fibre Pipework and Why Does It Fail?
Pitch fibre pipework is made from wood cellulose fibre impregnated with refined coal tar pitch, roughly 25% fibre to 75% pitch by weight. It was cheap and quick to lay, but it softens, blisters and deforms over time, which is why it collapses and attracts roots.
Historical Installation & Gradual Structural Degradation
Pitch fibre pipes were mostly used from the 1950s to the early 1970s. They came in 8 foot lengths, so they were faster to install and easier to handle than clay of the same period. They were once seen as a modern system. Drainage specialists now treat them as a known risk. If you have a pitch fibre system, check it and plan a repair or replacement before a failure forces the issue.
Here is how a typical pitch fibre repair runs:
-
1
Survey We inspect the drain with CCTV and record the pipe condition.
-
2
Clean We use controlled high pressure water jetting so the pipe walls are clean before any lining.
-
3
Choose the method We match the repair to what the survey shows: re-round and reline, pipe bursting, or a targeted excavation.
-
4
Repair We carry out the no-dig work wherever the pipe allows it.
-
5
Check We confirm the finished drain with a CCTV survey. A post-installation CCTV survey is included as standard to verify complete liner bonding, smooth surface flow, and open lateral junctions before sign-off.
Warning Signs of a Failing Pitch Fibre Drain
Pitch fibre loses structural strength gradually, and collapse can happen without much notice. A collapse blocks the drain and can undermine the ground above it. Do not leave a suspected collapse for later. Roots enter through damaged walls and joints, then grow to block the pipe. Removing the roots without sealing the pipe leaves the same entry points open. We seal the pipe after clearing.
| Symptom | What it usually means | What we do |
|---|---|---|
|
Slow drains or repeat blockages
|
Blistering or layers peeling inside the pipe | CCTV survey, then relining or re-rounding |
|
Gurgling, damp patches or odours
|
A crack, joint failure or partial collapse | CCTV survey and targeted repair |
|
Pipe shape visibly squashed on camera
|
Deformation (the pipe is no longer round) | Re-rounding, or pipe bursting if deformation is major |
|
Roots visible in the pipe
|
Root ingress through damaged walls or joints | Root removal, then lining to seal the pipe |
|
Sudden total blockage or sunken ground
|
Collapse | Emergency repair, see below |
Emergency Collapsed Pitch Fibre Drain Repairs
If a pitch fibre drain has collapsed, call M.R. Drains straight away. We offer a 24/7 emergency response with no call-out charges, and we survey the collapse first so the repair fits the damage. Signs of a collapse include a drain that will not clear, wastewater backing up, or ground that has started to sink along the drain run. Stop using water where you can, and call us.
After a CCTV survey we confirm the extent of the damage. Where the pipe has failed completely, a localised excavation is usually needed at the collapse. Wherever the rest of the run is sound enough, we line it so the repair stays as small as possible. Our engineers reach London and Surrey call-outs by the M25, M3 and M4. Typically arriving within 60 to 90 minutes across London and Surrey for active structural emergencies.
No-Dig Pitch Fibre Pipe Repair: Relining, Re-Rounding and Pipe Bursting
No-dig pitch fibre pipe repair means fixing the drain from inside, so your garden, driveway and floors stay intact. The main options are CIPP relining after re-rounding, or pipe bursting. A CCTV survey decides which one fits your pipe. We have several repair methods when a pitch fibre system fails. The right one can only be decided after the system has been surveyed and assessed. Even on a no-dig job, some excavation is usually needed, most often where junctions join the main run.
| Method | Best for | Digging needed | Limits |
|---|---|---|---|
| Re-rounding and CIPP lining Preferred No-Dig Option | Internal blistering and delamination, with no major loss of shape | Little, mainly at junctions | Not suitable where the pipe is badly deformed |
| Pipe bursting Trenchless Replacement | Major deformation, where lining is not possible | Access pits at each end | Needs a clear run for the new pipe |
| Traditional excavation Structural Replacement | Collapsed sections, or runs that no-dig methods cannot reach | Yes, along the repair length | Most disruptive option |
Pitch Fibre Pipe Re-Rounding: What It Involves
Re-rounding restores a squashed pitch fibre pipe to its original shape before it is lined. It suits pipes with blistering and delamination but no major loss of shape. Once the pipe is round and clean, a CIPP liner is fitted inside it. The liner forms a new, smooth surface within the old pipe. Where the pipe has deformed too far, we recommend pipe bursting instead. We install polyester or epoxy resin CIPP liners, ambient or hot-water cured, engineered with an independent design life of 50+ years and backed by our 10-year warranty.
Pitch Fibre Drain Relining in Surrey and London
Pitch fibre drain relining fits a new CIPP liner inside the existing pipe, so the old drain is sealed and strengthened without a full dig. Relining is our usual first choice for pitch fibre pipes that still hold their shape. We have the right equipment for homes in Surrey towns such as Molesey and Hook, where long gardens and mature trees make full excavation costly and disruptive.

Commercial Rehabilitation, Jetting Risks & Insurance Coverage
Pitch fibre was not only used in houses. Older commercial and industrial buildings in London may still have it. A failing drain at a business can stop trade, so speed and minimal disruption matter. Serving commercial landlords, property managers, educational facilities, and hospitality sites under CHAS and SafeContractor accredited standards.
Commercial Pitch Fibre Drain Rehabilitation
We rehabilitate commercial pitch fibre drains with the same CCTV-led approach: survey, clean, then reline or replace. No-dig methods keep premises open wherever the pipe allows it. Call our 24/7 line to arrange a survey. There is no call-out charge.
Why Clearing Can Make It Worse
Rodding, mechanical rodding and high pressure water jetting can speed up damage in a pitch fibre pipe, because they strip away the blistered inner layers of the pipe wall. Pitch fibre systems block from time to time, so clearance is sometimes unavoidable. Each time layers are removed, the pipe becomes weaker. For that reason we use controlled jetting and survey the pipe first. A drain that blocks repeatedly is usually telling you it needs repair, not another clearance.
Is Defective Pitch Fibre Covered by Insurance?
Insurers often decline claims once they find the defective drain is pitch fibre. Whether you are covered depends on your policy, so check the wording and ask your insurer in writing. We are often contacted about this. The insurer's argument is that pitch fibre has a limited life and begins to deteriorate once it is laid. The counter-argument is that insurers accept your premium on the basis that your system is made of suitable material. The material usually only comes to light when something goes wrong, and most homeowners do not know what their drain is made of.
WRc-Compliant Insurance Evidence & Pipe Replacement
While insurance companies often cite gradual wear and tear to reject pitch fibre claims, the Financial Ombudsman Service (FOS) has repeatedly upheld homeowner complaints where a sudden external stress, root intrusion, or ground movement caused structural collapse. We provide WRc-compliant diagnostic survey reports formatted to support formal insurance disputes. A CCTV survey report gives you evidence of the drain's material and condition to share with your insurer. We do not give legal or insurance advice.
Pitch Fibre Pipe Replacement: When Relining is Not Enough
Replacement is needed when the pipe has deformed too far to reline, or has collapsed. We replace it by pipe bursting where the route allows, and by excavation where it does not. Pipe bursting breaks up the old pitch fibre pipe and pulls a new pipe along the same line. It is usually less disruptive than a full dig. Excavation is the traditional method, and it is the right answer where the pipe has fully failed or where a junction must be rebuilt. We explain which option fits your drain, and why, before work starts.

Pitch Fibre Drain Repair FAQs
Direct answers about identifying pitch fibre pipes, trenchless re-rounding, pipe bursting limits, repair costs, insurance claims, and jetting damage risks across London and Surrey.
How do I know if my drain is pitch fibre?
A CCTV survey will show it. Pitch fibre pipes look jet black and matt when a manhole cover is lifted. They were mostly used from the 1950s to the early 1970s, so homes from that era are most at risk.
Can pitch fibre pipes be repaired without digging?
Often, yes. If the pipe has internal blistering but has kept its shape, we re-round it and reline it with CIPP. Some excavation is usually still needed, most often at junctions.
When do you need pipe bursting instead of relining?
When the pipe has deformed too far to reline. Pipe bursting replaces the pipe along the same route, with less digging than a full excavation.
How much does pitch fibre drain repair cost?
Pricing depends on the degree of deformation, total meterage, and whether re-rounding or spot junction excavation is needed. We supply a fixed-price written quotation after our initial CCTV survey with zero call-out charges.
Do you charge a call-out fee?
No. M.R. Drains does not charge a call-out fee, and our emergency response runs 24/7.
Is pitch fibre drainage covered by home insurance?
It varies by policy. Insurers often decline once they learn the drain is pitch fibre. Check your policy wording and ask your insurer in writing.
Does jetting damage pitch fibre pipes?
It can. Rodding and jetting can strip the blistered inner layers and weaken the pipe further. That is why we survey first and use controlled jetting.
